Hailing from Livorno, Italy, Bizzarrini joined Alfa Romeo as a test driver in 1953 after graduating as an engineer and helped develop Alfa Romeo’s highly successful Giulietta. Having quickly earned a reputation for problem-solving, Bizzarrini was recruited by Ferrari in 1957, where he began as a test driver and soon rose to the position of Chief Engineer. While at Ferrari, Bizzarrini collaborated with Carlo Chiti on the potent V-12 engine powering the 250 Testa Rossa sports racer, culminating in the 250 GT SWB and its radical re-engineering into the 250 GTO that helped Ferrari secure three consecutive Manufacturer’s Championships 1962-64.

Bizzarrini’s work progressed at an unusually diverse pace after leaving Ferrari in late 1961. Among his many efforts was design and development of Lamborghini’s original V-12 engine and the sophisticated, Chevrolet-powered Rivolta GT developed in 1962 for Isothermos company founder Renzo Rivolta.

However, Bizzarrini still longed to design and build a true sports car, successfully convincing Rivolta to greenlight the A3/L, also known as the Grifo (Griffon), envisioned by Bizzarrini as the basis for an internationally competitive racing car. Development included shortening an Iso Rivolta frame and movement of the small-block Chevrolet V-8 engine further back to create essentially a mid-engine configuration. Draftsman Piero Vanni sketched the basic body shape and refinements were penned by Bertone’s Giorgetto Giugiaro. The sweeping bodyshell and supporting structure were formed at Piero Drogo’s Sports Cars Modena works. Prominently debuted at the 1963 Turin show, the production Iso Grifo and A3/C Grifo racer on display there drew speculation of a possible forthcoming Stradale (street) version of the latter.

Grifos were raced through the 1964 season at the 12 Hours of Sebring and across Europe, with the highlight being First in Class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This win was scored by an A3/C driven to France and back by Bizzarrini, driven in the race by Pierre Noblet and Edgar Berney for Auguste Veuillet. A lone example raced with success in American SCCA competition with William McLaughlin, who won class at the Mid-America SCCA Regional and Lake Garnett SCCA National races in 1964. Eventually, relations between Bizzarrini and Rivolta soured, minimizing factory support for the next season. Compounding the situation, Bizzarrini and Drogo parted ways, forcing the engineer to contract with new body suppliers.

Despite these setbacks, Iso once again scored a class victory at Le Mans in 1965 with the A3/C. However, the Rivolta-Bizzarrini partnership ended for good. Since Bizzarrini had the foresight to register the ‘Grifo’ name, he sold rights to the name to Rivolta in exchange for sufficient parts supplies to complete 50 A3/C-based road cars, named “Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada” after its 5.3-liter Chevrolet V-8 engine and Grand Touring purpose. A beautiful open-air version, the 5300 GT Spyder SI, as well as a version intended for the USA, the GT America, was also envisioned, with distribution to be handled by racing legend John Fitch. The GT 1900 Europa, with Fiat or Opel running gear, was yet another promising but short-lived creation of Bizzarrini. Still having his sights set on racing glory, Bizzarrini developed the P538 competition cars of the mid-1960s, with one contesting the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 before open prototypes were declared ineligible by the FIA for 1967.

A new company was established by Bizzarrini, but this time, his investors obtained loans against company assets and then absconded, leaving the distinguished engineer to pick up the pieces. A deal to develop the under-funded American Motors AMX/3 saw Bizzarrini and his team meet or exceed every one of the lofty performance goals for this promising mid-engine supercar, followed by further consulting assignments for Iso. According to marque experts, as few as 100 and as “many” as 139 Bizzarrini V-8 GT cars (A3/C, 5300 GT Strada, GT America, 5300 GT Spyder SI) were produced, predictably rendering these aggressively styled high-performance cars fiercely sought-after by knowledgeable collectors and enthusiasts today.

Built with form following function, Bizzarrini’s A3/C, Grifo, 5300 GT Strada and other road- and race cars carry the noticeable influence of birds of prey in terms of their frontal styling. Their long, flat bodysides were dictated by necessity, demanded by the competition-type saddle fuel tanks mounted at each side. Given the engine’s extreme rearward placement, distributor adjustments must be accomplished via a removable dash panel inside the cars!

Despite the challenging entry/exit dynamics caused by its extremely low profile and ride height, contemporary road testers found the 5300 GT Strada quite comfortable once inside, with rational pedal placement, a short-throw gear lever, and quilted transmission/driveshaft tunnel. Beautifully cast Campagnolo allow wheels provide a wonderful finishing touch in concert with minimal, yet effective use of bright body trim including vestigial bumpers up front, slender quarter-bumpers to the rear and various air vents.

Open-road performance is incredible with the Chevrolet 327 CI V-8 engine most often mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Period road tests, including a detailed report published in the September 1968 Sports Gra Graphic, quoted 160-mph capability. Handling is quite sophisticated with most examples produced with a de Dion rear axle system. Reliability is a further benefit of ownership, with easily obtained and relatively inexpensive powertrain parts, service availability and expertise, helping to make Bizzarrini ownership most enjoyable today.

Recognition and acceptance among collectors are strong, illustrated by Bizzarrini displays at Concorso Italiano and at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Given their performance credentials, V-8 Bizzarrini models are also ideally suited to the most desirable long-distance road rallies and classic tours, including the Colorado Grand and Copperstate 1000. As one of the most interesting and enigmatic classic GT cars of the 1960s, Bizzarrini’s V-8 models remain wonderful and enjoyable expressions of the fertile mind of one of Italy’s finest and most prolific engineers, Giotto Bizzarrini.

Offered by Artcurial’s Motorcars Department at the upcoming Automotive Legends auction at The Peninsula Paris on January 27th, this Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada is a particularly special example. The 19th of 20 cars built with a lightweight alloy body by Italian coachbuilder BBM after Drogo, Bizzarrini’s usual supplier, raised their prices, this example was retained by Bizzarrini and developed for racing. According to Artcurial’s in-depth research, “the car was used at first by Giotto Bizzarrini, probably with ‘Prova’ (prototype) plates, before being registered in April 1966 with the number LI 84127 in the name of the company CMC Vignone Lichio (as is corroborated by the Carta di circolazione), at the same address as the Bizzarrini factory on the via Filippo Venuti in Livorno. This was one of Giotto Bizzarrini’s companies and he therefore continued to use the car.”

Racing modifications included four Weber carburetors, rack-and-pinion steering identical to that on the P538 racing model, and a shorter 3.54:1 rear-axle ratio. Suspension upgrades included an adjustment system for the De Dion rear axle, and replacement of the rubber bushings with bronze items. Openings were cut into the body to reduce weight, and the car was fitted with wider (9.5-in) rear wheels, necessitating extended wheel arches, documented by photographs of the car taken at the Mugello circuit from 1967 onwards.

In 1966 and 1967, when its specification was still very close to the ‘Strada’ model, this alloy-bodied 5300 GT contested hill climbs with drivers Franco Failli and Gian Carlo Naddeo. The car was entered by the factory in the 1967 Mugello 500 km race, and according to the car’s entry sheet on file, it appears as ‘Prototipi Bizzarrini S.p.A’, clearly confirming its status as a factory entry. There, it finished 42nd Overall and a creditable Fifth in class, with Naddeo driving.

After retirement from competition with the factory, this car was sold in September 1968 to its first private owner, Aldo Manna from Savigliano (near Cuneo), registered CN 185025. It was driven on the road and sold in 1977 to a fellow Italian, who sold it three months later to Sweden, where it remained since then, with the current owner having acquired the Bizzarrini in 1983. While a restoration was long planned, the car was preserved instead, with the factory side-mounted fuel tanks removed for added safety and a great-sounding side-exit exhaust system installed.

The original Italian Libretto is included with the sale of this fabulous 1960s GT car, along with outstanding documentation, including photographs and other paperwork. Auction estimates are €1.3 to €2 Million, or at today’s rates, USD $1,515,195 to $2,331,069 (see xe.com).

Another fabulous classic Italian GT/racing car brought to market by the Artcurial team, this alloy-bodied 1965 Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada brings a large dose of glamor and excitement to the upcoming Automobile Legends auction taking place on January 27th at The Peninsula Paris, the first event of Paris Classic Car Week.
