A rare 1976 Ford E-150 Denimachine brought 1970s custom van culture roaring back at Vanfest 2026 near Aylmer, Ontario. Created through an unforgettable collaboration between Hot Rod magazine, Ford, Levi\u2019s, Coca-Cola and Van Goodies of Chicago, the Denimachine remains one of the wildest and most memorable boogie vans of its era.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I just attended Vanfest 2026, the 29th edition of this fun 4-day event, including custom vans, of course, plus pickup trucks, campers, motorhomes, and overlanders. Held at Springwater Conservation Area near Aylmer, Ontario, Vanfest was laid-back and lightly structured, as one would expect. Enthusiasm and participation were high, with vehicle owners and crew happily answering questions and hanging out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have a little experience with organizing events, and I\u2019d like to thank the organizers, volunteers, exhibitors, attendees, and even Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, headliners of the \u201cChristmas in June\u201d event theme, \u201cChristmas in June.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Classic and period \u201870s and \u201880s custom vans included one of fewer than 40 (by some published accounts) 1976 Ford E-150 \u201cDenimachine\u201d vans built. I thought this would be appropriate, given that these highly customized \u201cboogie vans\u201d were conceived and created in 1976 – America\u2019s Bicentennial year, and 2026 is the landmark 250th anniversary of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Denimachine was the result of an epic collaboration between Hot Rod<\/em> magazine, Ford Motor Company, Levi\u2019s, Coca-Cola, and about 20 suppliers and service providers. Among them, major contributors included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hot Rod<\/em> \u2013 designed the Denimachine and featured it and the build in print<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Levi\u2019s \u2013 supplied the denim fabric for the interior, including their signature brass rivets  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coca-Cola \u2013 provided a beverage refrigerator and plenty of branding to target young consumers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ford Motor Company \u2013 Supplied the E-150 Econoline vans for conversion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Van Goodies of Chicago built\/converted each Denimachine van. Less than 40 were built initially in a sweepstakes contest in the United States and Canada. Each van was reportedly valued at $18,000 in 1976 dollars, representing over $100k today! Unforgettable Red, White, and Blue paint with flame licks, plus denim upholstery (including pockets), Red shag carpeting \u2013 what else, an 8-track tape player, CB radio, RCA TV, and Coca-Cola refrigerator made the Denimachine a standout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Denimachine program is likely one of the most successful and popular vehicle giveaways in automotive history. The vans were drawn from an overwhelming public response, including over 2 million entries! Predictably, the program was so successful that many clones\/copies were created by fans of the originals, using readily available parts and components. Few original Denimachines survive today. The Denimachine on display was very nicely preserved and unmodified, making it a strong crowd draw at Vanfest 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Denimachine at Vanfest 2026 is an original article, preserved and shown by the folks at St. Mary\u2019s Ford in Ontario, Canada. A small-scale, go-kart-style replica accompanied it. Personally, the Denimachine was my gateway drug to Vanfest 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another Denimachine, rescued from 26 years of storage in Florida, is currently on the Hot Rod<\/em> magazine Power Tour. Rolling along historic Route 66, America\u2019s legendary \u201cMother Road\u201d from Illinois to Oklahoma, June 8-12, 2026, this historic and famous custom van will help celebrate the highway’s 100th anniversary in fine form, indeed. According to coverage on The Boogie Van Facebook page, this Denimachine should be at World Wide Technology Raceway in St. Louis, Missouri, today on Day 3 of the Power Tour.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the Denimachine Still Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 50 years after it was created, the Denimachine still works because it captures something larger than custom paint, shag carpet, denim upholstery, or period accessories. It represents a moment when vans were not just transportation, but rolling expressions of personality, freedom, youth culture, marketing imagination, and pure 1970s optimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, that gives the Denimachine a cultural reach far beyond its production numbers. It connects Hot Rod magazine, Ford, Levi\u2019s, Coca-Cola, custom-van builders, sweepstakes promotion, Bicentennial-era Americana, and the do-it-yourself energy of van culture into one unforgettable package. It is commercial, yes, but also wonderfully human: a vehicle built to attract attention, invite conversation, and make people smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That impact remains visible today. Whether preserved at Vanfest, followed online through The Boogie Van community, or celebrated on the road during Power Tour activity, the Denimachine reminds us that collector vehicles do not need to be exotic, expensive, or concours-perfect to matter. Some survive because they tell a better story than almost anything else in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Denimachine is one of those vehicles. It is a time capsule, a promotional artifact, a custom-van icon, and a rolling piece of pop culture. Most of all, it is proof that the collector-car world is at its best when it makes room for the unexpected, the colorful, and the joyfully outrageous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, the Denimachine lives – and nearly half a century later, it still knows exactly how to stop a crowd in its tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
