Bayfield Volkfest, the Huron County celebration of classic and vintage Volkswagens that ran for 12 years, will reportedly not return in 2027. One of the organizers announced the cancellation the day after this year’s September 27 show at the Bayfield Fairgrounds, worn down by rising costs, a venue change, and a steady stream of complaints about a $5 admission – this from an event whose campout crowd raised $900 for kids to attend Camp Menesetung over the same weekend. The campout continues. The show is done, unless enough people who loved it step up with more than good wishes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement came Monday, the day after this year’s show filled the Bayfield Fairgrounds with a beautiful cross-section of rolling Volkswagen history. Twelve years in, the organizer is finished. The weekend campout will carry on \u2014 “you people are family,” he wrote \u2014 but the show itself is over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My family and I were there Sunday. We’d spent the first eight years of this event hearing about it after the fact, and for the past several we’ve marked the date on the kitchen calendar like clockwork. Volkfest was the reminder that fun with cars doesn’t have to be expensive. You can certainly spend money buying, maintaining, modifying and restoring Volkswagens, but the company’s name translates as “people’s car,” and these machines remain genuinely accessible. That accessibility was the whole premise: good times with people who like the same odd, friendly, air-cooled things you do. Money could be part of it. It was never the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Sunday looked like<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Smiling faces everywhere. A show field running the full span of Volkswagen history, from Beetles to Buses to campers still wearing the scars of real use. Live music on the Lions Club stage from a rotating lineup of singer-songwriters, including a strong set by Janna Leduc of Milverton. I’m a lifelong Charlie Daniels fan, and her turn through “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” had me wishing I could play fiddle well enough to challenge Satan myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was far too much going on to capture more than a few dozen photographs. They’re below, and I hope you enjoy the trip as much as we did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why it ended<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This year’s edition moved back to the Bayfield Fairgrounds, a block off Main Street, after 2025 at Courthouse Square in downtown Goderich. Venue changes cost money. So do the required number of serviced portable toilets, the insurance, and the dozen other line items nobody thinks about until they’re signing for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there was the grumbling about the $5 admission. Five Canadian dollars, for a day of cars, music and community \u2014 and in recent years, a portion of each vehicle entry has gone to local youth groups in Bayfield and Goderich. The campout crowd went further this year: their Saturday donation brunch, cooked by camp volunteers, raised $900 for Camp Menesetung, money that will send kids to summer camp who otherwise couldn’t afford to go. That’s what the people who actually showed up and pitched in were doing while others were complaining about the price of entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere in there, a labour of love turned into a second job that pays nothing. The organizer’s Monday post said it plainly: he started this for fun and community, he’s been sacrificing important parts of his life to keep it running, and it isn’t fun anymore. He was gracious about the people who showed up with a good attitude \u2014 lifelong friendships, eternal gratitude \u2014 and considerably less gracious about the ones who turn up for two hours to critique an event they’ve never had to fund, staff or insure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who has ever organized anything will recognize the arithmetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would actually save it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The temptation is to flood the Bayfield Volkfest Facebook page with heartbroken comments. Please don’t. More notifications are precisely what the man doesn’t need right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What might work is more specific and more inconvenient. There are thousands of VW owners within a four-to-eight-hour radius of Bayfield. Some fraction of them could commit to a setup and teardown crew. Someone could sponsor the sanitation and insurance line items outright, or run the vendor coordination, or take on the permits. A small committee sharing the load looks nothing like one person carrying all of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the offer worth making. Not “we’ll miss this,” but “here’s the specific job I’ll take.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The part that matters beyond Bayfield<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Grassroots shows like this one are the foundation of everything above them. They’re where a kid sees a split-window Bus for the first time, where a first-time owner finds out what their car actually is, where the collector market’s next generation gets made. They run on unpaid labour, thin margins and one person’s patience, and they end the moment that patience does. The crowds make them look permanent. They aren’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkfest drew hundreds of cars for twelve years, and it took one Monday morning to end it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campout continues, and the brunch tells you why that matters. The people who stay the whole weekend, cook for each other and hand $900 to a summer camp are the same people the organizer called family. That community isn’t going anywhere. If the show comes back, it will be because enough of the rest of us decided that a free festival isn’t free, and picked up a share of what it costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
