The Carl Casper-built Batmobile that carried Michael Keaton through Gotham City in 1992’s Batman Returns will cross the block for the first time on Monday, November 23, 2026, at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles and online. Estimated at $5 million to $7 million, it is described as unaltered since filming and still wearing its original black paint. If it reaches the estimate, it will pass the $4.62 million paid for George Barris’ iconic 1966 TV Batmobile in 2013, the current record for any Batmobile sold at auction.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few film cars are recognizable from a silhouette alone. The long, low, jet-intake Batmobile of Tim Burton’s two Batman films is one of them. More than three decades after Batman Returns<\/em> opened in June 1992, one of the cars that made that silhouette famous is being offered at auction for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julien’s Auctions, in partnership with Turner Classic Movies, will sell the car on Monday, November 23, 2026, in Gardena, California, and online. Julien’s describes it as the “Number One Hero car” from the film, screen-matched to the majority of its driving sequences. The pre-sale estimate is $5 million to $7 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 1989 basic design, refined for more screen time in 1992<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The shape began with the 1989 Batman<\/em>. Production designer Anton Furst led the design, with concept illustrations by Julian Caldow. For the first film, John Evans’ special effects team built the cars at Pinewood Studios in England on Chevrolet Impala chassis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the sequel, Warner Bros. turned to Carl Casper and his company, Hollywood Productions, to build three new cars to the Furst design. According to Silodrome, the producers reportedly wanted more dependable cars, because the Batmobile had a larger role in Batman Returns<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The car on offer measures roughly 19 feet, 8 inches long. Its frame is two Chevrolet Impala chassis spliced together, under a one-piece fiberglass body. The front end is shaped like a large jet-turbine intake, and the sculpted rear fenders sit behind big fresh-air scoops. Power comes from a Chevrolet V-8 and a three-speed automatic. The jet-engine sound in the film was added in post-production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two-seat cockpit has aircraft-style instruments and a range of effects gadgets. The tail flame was real: a pressurized mix of air and kerosene, fired by radio transmitter. The Marconi Automotive Museum says the system could throw a flame more than 20 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carl Casper: from Flint to Gotham<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Casper was born in Flint, Michigan, and bought a 1951 Chevrolet at 15, modifying it before he was old enough to drive. His Exotic Empress<\/em> custom won Top Custom at the 1961 NHRA Nationals show. Mr. Casper also won the biggest award in the custom-car world, America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR), at the 1965 edition of the famed Oakland Grand National Roadster Show. Named Casper’s Ghost, the wild custom (kustom?) car was loosely based on a ’23 Model T, featuring an Indy-car-style nose cone, a twin-supercharged V-8 engine, and upturned rear pickup bed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1963 he launched the Carl Casper Custom Auto Show in Louisville, which ran every February until 2017. The National Corvette Museum credits him with producing, co-producing or partnering on more than 1,000 car shows. The show circuit led him into Hollywood. Casper built touring General Lee Chargers from The Dukes of Hazzard<\/em>, followed by touring versions of KITT and the A-Team<\/em> van. Warner Bros. had already licensed his company to build and tour promotional Batmobiles before it gave him the Batman Returns<\/em> contract. “Having built many Hollywood movie and TV vehicles, nothing has compared to being a part of the sensational Warner Bros.\/Tim Burton team in building this awesome number one Batman Returns<\/em> Batmobile,” Casper said in Julien’s announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Provenance and condition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After filming wrapped, the car appeared at the film’s premiere and a Warner Bros. backlot party, then went back to Hollywood Productions. It spent several years in storage. In 2021 it went on display at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin, California, a nonprofit that supports Orange County children’s charities. The current owner has not been named.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julien’s states that the car’s appearance has not been altered since production and that its glossy black paint is original. For a 34-year-old film car, that originality is the point. Restored movie cars are common; unrestored, screen-matched hero cars are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2013 auction record in play<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The benchmark is George Barris’ 1966 TV Batmobile, built from the Lincoln Futura concept, which sold for $4.62 million at Barrett-Jackson’ signature Scottsdale, Arizona auction in 2013. Even at the low estimate, the Batman Returns<\/em> car would set a new Batmobile record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a big number for a fiberglass body on spliced Impala frames, and value here has little to do with engineering. Buyers are paying for cultural reach: the car that defined Batman on screen for a generation, from a film that helped set the darker tone of the modern superhero blockbuster. As blue-chip cars from the 1960s and 1970s change hands, buyers who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s are now bidding on the cars of their own childhoods. This sale will show how far that demand goes at the very top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Batmobile headlines a wider sale of Batman film and television material, including costumes, props, production sketches, models and toys. Julien’s says more lots will be announced in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Original, unrestored and screen-matched, the Batman Returns<\/em> hero car is the kind of film car that rarely comes to market, and this is its first time at auction. Whether it sets a new Batmobile record or not, its result will become a reference point for movie-car values.
