The Motorcopia Market Pulse™
Week of Sep 15–21, 2025
1) Category Scores (0–10) with brief justifications
- Auction Pipeline Volume (14%) – 6.4
Three meaningful events fell inside the window: Mecum’s Larry’s Legacy (Sep 19–21, Chicago), Gooding Christie’s Stan Lucas Collection (Sep 20, Long Beach), and Saratoga Motorcar Auction (Sep 19–20, NY). Healthy but not “Monterey-scale” volumes. - Pre-Auction Vehicle Quality Index (10%) – 6.0
The Stan Lucas estate was a quality, curated sale of Brass/Classic Era cars, while Mecum’s Larry’s Legacy featured eclectic, show-car customs; Saratoga’s catalog mixed mid-market with a few halo lots. - Private Listings Velocity (10%) – 6.2
Classified and online platforms remained active; no visible mid-September slowdown across major enthusiast venues (supporting flow around these events). (Directional corroboration from listings activity around event weeks.) - Collector Sentiment Online (13%) – 6.1
Strong engagement around the Stan Lucas results (pre-war enthusiasm back in focus) and Mecum highlights; social chatter on Saratoga’s record Ferrari also boosted interest. - Pre-Sale Dealer Activity (11%) – 5.8
Dealers reported selective restocking in the run-up to these sales; liquidity costs still counsel caution (see #8). (Synthesis from market commentary and observed consignment mix.) - Search & Listing Data (8%) – 6.0
Event pages and local press coverage drove queries: Saratoga publicity and post-event recaps; Gooding press; Mecum daily “Results” posts. - Media Tone & Volume (7%) – 6.0
Coverage was constructive: Gooding Christie’s touted $33.9M and 100% sell-through; regional press amplified Saratoga’s records; Mecum published day-by-day highlights. - Financial Liquidity Outlook (11%) – 5.4
Higher rates remain a headwind; however, no-reserve structure at Stan Lucas and rational estimates helped clear inventory, signaling demand exists when friction is lowered. - Geopolitical Risk Forecast (6%) – 5.0
Background macro/geopolitical noise persists; no direct shock in-week, but risk premium remains embedded. - Currency & Exchange Rates (3%) – 5.8
A firm USD continues to modestly dampen some cross-border buying even as headline US events attract global bidders. - Leading Economic Indicators (2%) – 5.5
Mixed macro signals (neither boom nor bust) translated into price-disciplined bidding outside top-tier headline lots. - Regulatory/Taxation Risk (5%) – 5.0
No new policy shock in-week; longer-term emissions/ULEZ narratives still a mild drag on usage perception rather than ownership.

A dense auciton schedule and strong realized results offset liquidity/currency friction and mixed regional quality.
3) Summary Comments
The week of Sep 15-21 was a fall cornucopia (Motorcopia?) jam-packed with live collector-car auction activity, with five events confirming the ongoing appeal and solidity of the market. Offerings were many, making it a considerable task for us to meaningfully follow them. All this activity took place as the fall 2025 auction schedule and pre-sale marketing campaigns heat up through December, providing enthusiasts, collectors, and enthusiasts with ongoing confidence in this widely followed and extremely valuable alternative-asset marketplace.
Gooding Christie’s Stan Lucas Collection sake delivered a market-defining day: 100% sold, $33.9M realized, and multiple world records in the Brass/Classic Era segment – proof that quality, provenance and a no-reserve auction structure can trump even considerable macro (big picture) headwinds. A number of vehicles sailed past pre-auctione stimates and several new world records were achieved.
The more mainstream-oriented Saratoga Motorcar Auction cleared ~70% sell-through and topped $8M, headlined by a Ferrari 458 Speciale at a reported $808,500 – a new world record for the model, showing that well-presented modern exotics still find depth.
Somehow, the Robert Richardson Collection auction conducted by Bonhams | Cars on the 21st slipped through our market watch, with a huge selection of automobilia, collectibles, and interesting competition and kustom cars offered, with a decided California car-culture focus To be frank, pre-sale marketing appears to have been limited and this private collection deserved more viibility in our opinion.
Mecum’s Larry’s Legacy collection kept engagement high across an eclectic and extremely interesting lineup of well over 200 automotive lots alone, motorcycles, and a wide assortment of “Road Art” or automobilia pieces. Six-figure sales were many, with marquee cars ranging from grand prewar Full Classic® motorcars to influential period customs of the 1950s and ‘60s, and iconic American muscle cars.
In all, net bidder demand is selective but solid, with disciplined pricing for mid-tier offerings and outperformance for high-quality, story-rich, fresh-to-market cars.
