International Narco Drama and Supercar Royalty: Valuing the FBI-Seized Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR Roadster

By David C.R. Neyens, Motorcopia

By now, nearly every Supercar and classic car enthusiast with a pulse has been inundated with articles covering the recent seizure by the FBI’s Los Angeles office of an automotive icon: a Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR Roadster. The 5th of 6 “Strassenversion” Roadsters produced, this stunner was reportedly owned by Ryan Wedding, Canada’s snowboarding hopeful at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games. Likely, the best coverage of the whole sordid situation comes from ace Canadian journalist Sam Cooper and his website, The Bureau. There’s a paywall, but I wholeheartedly suggest you go there and sign up for his insightful news if you want the real story.

One of a truly rarefied breed, this CLK-GTR is essentially a unicorn as one of just 1 of 28 units built for the street during the heyday of FIA GT1 competition in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including 2 prototypes, 20 coupes, and 6 roadsters.

Narco infamy and legalities aside, the FBI has pegged a USD $13 million value expectation on this amazing CLK-GTR, which also basks in the racing glory conferred by the model’s 1997 and 1998 FIA GT Championship titles. Interestingly, this CLK-GTR is one of the 5 CLK-GTR Roadsters built by HWA, the firm operated by Hans Werner Aufrecht, the founder of Mercedes’ legendary tuning/racing arm, AMG.

Let’s put the FBI to the test and see what the Motorccopia ValueScope and Buy/Sell/Hold systems say about this car with our detailed analysis:

Parameters/Assumptions used for this analysis: based on an ideal selling scenario:

Clean title
Ideal venue (RM / Gooding / Bonhams headline slot)
#1 Concours condition
Fresh-to-market status
Zero legal/title friction

This removes all federal-seizure discounting and treats the car exactly as the market would if it appeared tomorrow as a fully curated top-tier lot.

MOTORCOPIA VALUESCOPE™ – CLK GTR ROADSTER (IDEAL CONDITIONS)

Vehicle: 2002 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR Roadster

Production: 6 units

Condition Assumption: #1 Concours

Venue Assumption: RM Sotheby’s Monterey / Las Vegas, Gooding Pebble Beach, Bonhams Quail Lodge, etc.

Provenance Weight: Neutral/positive (fresh, clean, documented)

STEP 1 — BASELINE MARKET COMPS (USD)

Public sale comps for Roadsters are extremely few but very strong:

🔹 2023 RM Sotheby’s Las Vegas — $10,235,000 (sold)

  • Chassis 034
  • 170 km
  • Third of six Roadsters
  • Immaculate condition
  • New market benchmark

🔹 2015 Bonhams Goodwood — £1,513,500 ≈ $2.3M at the time

  • Chassis 008
  • Very early market, pre-hypercar valuation explosion
  • Not comparable to post-2020 market psychology

Private sale estimates (reliable insider chatter):

  • $8M–$12M for Roadsters historically
  • Current sentiment pushes valuation to $12M–$15M depending on condition

Fresh-to-market premium: +5–8%

#1 condition premium: +20% (your standard)

STEP 2 — AVERAGE & MEDIAN VALUES

We weight the most recent sale heavily:

  • Average of meaningful modern comps → ≈ $11.5M
  • Median → ≈ $10.2M
  • Market trend → Strong upward (post-2023)

Baseline midpoint used for Motorcopia ValueScope™: $11.6M

STEP 3 — CONDITION MULTIPLIER (#1 Concours = +20%)

  • $11.6M × 1.20 = $13.9M

Adjusted Value (Ideal Scenario):

$13.5M–$14.2M range
We use $13.9M as the working value.

STEP 4 — SENTIMENT SCORING (0–10)

Trend: 8.7

Hypercar/GT1 homologation market strong, low supply, UHNW (Ultra-High Net Worth) buyers enjoy abundant financial liquidity.

Rarity: 10.0

Only 6 Roadsters; essentially unobtainable.

Cultural Significance: 9.4

Peak AMG/HWA era; FIA GT royalty; legendary FIA Championship-winning engineering.

Cost Burden: 5.0

Maintenance complexity, parts scarcity, insurance cost high.

Demographics: 8.9

Younger UHNW collectors (tech, crypto, young wealth) highly interested.

Market Activity: 7.8

Thin volume, but every sale is headline-making.

STEP 5 — WEIGHTED SENTIMENT SCORE

CategoryScoreWeightWeighted
Trend8.720%1.74
Rarity10.015%1.50
Cultural9.420%1.88
Cost5.010%0.50
Demographics8.915%1.34
Market Activity7.820%1.56

Total Score = 8.52 / 10

Interpretation: Very strong, in the upper tier of all hypercar investments.

STEP 6 — VALUE FORECAST (USD)

Using your standard growth assumptions:

Immediate (0%)

$13.9M

Short-Term (+5%)

$14.6M

Medium-Term (+10%)

$15.3M

Long-Term (+20%)

$16.7M

STEP 7 — RECOMMENDED RESERVE PRICE

Reserve = 95% of short-term value
0.95 × $14.6M ≈ $13.87M

Recommended Reserve: $13.8M–$14.0M

This is exactly the range where UHNW bidders stay engaged without feeling the reserve is “symbolic only.”

STEP 8 — BUY/SELL/HOLD ANALYSIS

Buy:

YES — for UHNW collectors who want the best AMG GT1 road car ever made.
Strong long-term fundamentals, microscopic supply, global appeal.

Sell:

NO — unless aiming to lock in liquidity. Long-term curve seems stable-to-bullish.

Hold:

YES — especially if acquired near $13–14M. Ideal hold for 3–7 years.

Overall Recommendation:

BUY / HOLD
Hyper-rare, stable valuation floor, and cultural significance continue to rise.

FINAL IDEAL-VENUE VALUATION SUMMARY

ScenarioValue
Fair Market Value Today$13.5–14.0M
Short-term estimate$14.6M
Medium-term estimate$15.3M
Long-term potential$16.7M+

Under clean-title, ideal-venue conditions, the CLK-GTR Roadster is positioned among the most desirable and strategically important Hypercars of the past three decades. Only six Roadsters were ever built, and the model’s FIA GT1 roots, AMG/HWA engineering pedigree, and rarity place it firmly at the intersection of motorsport history and ultra-limited production craftsmanship. With the 2023 RM Sotheby’s sale establishing a firm floor at $10.2M, a concours-grade, fresh-to-market example reasonably achieves a $13.5M–$14.0M valuation today, with near-term appreciation into the mid-$14M range.

Market sentiment in the hyper-rare analog Supercar sector remains strong, supported by rising global UHNW demand and constrained supply. As a result, the CLK-GTR Roadster offers a compelling Buy/Hold profile for collectors seeking trophy-level assets with both cultural significance and tangible investment resilience. This is a long-horizon car whose market trajectory remains structurally supported by irreversible scarcity and expanding historical recognition.
